Yewande Biala- Love Island Celebrity !!

😃 Hey everyone

So this is a follow up to my previous post about doing a career in science/nutrition. I did not really expand it on too much, but have decided that really this is something that I can expand more on regarding this topic. As I feel that a career in science/physics/biomedical etc is a career that is unattainable, like becoming a millionaire. They say its not achievable, but if you put your mind to it anything is possible, believe me, you can do this!!

They are many opportunities to work in the science industry, I am just listing here the various examples below, as I know of them, or have worked with them:

  • Environmental Health Practioner
  • Nutrition Scientist
  • Food Safety Advisor
  • Laboratory assistant
  • Biomedical Scientist
  • Nutrition consultant
  • Pharmacist
This is the just a handful of some of the careers that are part of the science family, but as you can see the roles are very diverse. Also these roles above pay quite well, especially as the experience develops.

Now I can only discuss nutrition because that has been my career for the last 15 years. The roles in this field is also quite diverse. You can work in the NHS, especially in the local public health team, or you can work in the food industry, with the science team, making sure that the food produced is to the highest quality, in regard to the nutrients etc. Another interesting field is animal nutrition. It has been in the news that the amount of people taking in pets since the pandemic has increased significantly, well these animals need good nutrition right??
Working in the care home, making sure the patients are receiving the adequate nutrition needed, including hospitals, and schools. (remember Jamie Oliver and his school campaign!!)
Nutrition is so important especially now with the pandemic, as the Government has stated that there is correlation between nutrition and obesity. So they would recruit research nutritionists/nutrition scientists to study this, and to advise best recommendations.
Now these routes are done by attending University, but personally as the whole education system has changed over the last 5 years, I think it is a little easier to get there. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to get in, as you get the experience , you are paid a salary, and attending college/university couple of days a week. At the end of the course, the qualification you get is like an equivalent to a degree. Like myself in my previous post, I stated that I have an AVCE in Science, but this is equivalent to two A levels. With apprenticeships , you are already receiving that work experience, which you can use to advance in your career, you are developing your skills and the confidence; especially when going to job interviews. Nobody told me about job interviews at university, but that is the opportunity where you are really selling yourself, showing them your experience and skills.

Overall I would advise to research into these careers, see if this is something you would like to do or similar. It is a fantastic career because everything above, you are really helping people to live better in some way or form.
If you are within this career field, I would really love to hear from you!! lets see where this can take us, and to inspire our young community, who are the next generation.
Oh so.. I am including in this post a scientist who made herself a household name on the UK show called Love Island. She discusses her career on her You Tube Channel, watch her video, and let me know your thoughts

Best Wishes!!

  1. Hello, loads of thanks for these tips and video. They were so helpful. I am starting university very soon, I'm going to be a med student, and I'm so nervous, to be honest; I needed such advice. They will help me because I know starting university can be challenging; my mom said, start by making new friends that you can count on later, and manage your money well.

  2. I chose to study science at the university because I wanted to work at a laboratory, then I was specialized in the toxicology field. As a former student, I would advise new students to approach their classes and never skip any and to communicate with their professors because it is important and will keep you up to date with what's going on at the university.

  4. I'm planning to go to university but I'm still not exactly sure what I want to do. I was looking at Food Science and Nutrition because I'm interested in living a relatively healthy lifestyle and help people do the same. Thank you so much for this video and blog post! It will help me decide.

  5. This is a good list. Yes, career fields in science can come off overwhelming, and out of reach. It’s definitely attainable though by researching what’s out there, and going for it. In the last 15+ years, it’s been a huge push on STEM(Science, Technology Engineering, Math) STEAM( All of STEM with Arts added) and STREAM(Reading and Writing added) for school age kids because we need more kids to go into these fields.
